NASA announced the retirement of Janet Petro, the director of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She left a notable impact during her tenure, which began in 2007. Following her impressive career, she also filled in as acting administrator between January and July 2025.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Janet for her leadership, especially in transforming Kennedy into a leading multiuser spaceport. This shift was crucial for supporting commercial space operations and improving efficiency across government processes. Under her leadership, collaboration with the FAA and the U.S. Air Force was strengthened, enhancing government efforts in space exploration.
Before joining NASA, Janet worked in various roles in the military and aerospace industries. She started her career as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army after graduating from West Point in 1981, where she was part of the second class to include women. She also earned a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University.
Janet’s work has earned her several awards, including the President’s Distinguished Executive Award and the Silver Snoopy Award for her contribution to flight safety. She was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 2018 for her achievements.
Stepping into her role as acting director is Kelvin Manning. With over 32 years of experience, he aims to continue the center’s legacy and drive its mission forward.
