Marimekko Corporation announced exciting news on January 23, 2025. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved its emissions reduction goals. These goals aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the UN Paris Climate Agreement. Marimekko sees this as a key step in minimizing its environmental footprint.

Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, Marimekko’s President and CEO, emphasized the importance of creating high-quality, eco-friendly products. She explained that the company’s commitment to sustainability plays a crucial role in its future success. The new targets set the company on a path towards better environmental practices.
By the end of 2030, Marimekko aims to achieve:
- A 42% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from 2022 levels.
- A 51.6% reduction in scope 3 emissions per million EUR value added.
This includes managing emissions tied to land use related to bioenergy feedstocks.
More information about these targets will be available in Marimekko’s sustainability report in March 2024. This report will detail how the company plans to reach its goals.
Marimekko has been tracking its entire carbon footprint since 2019. By the end of 2023, it had reduced its scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 70% compared to 2019. A significant contributor to this reduction is the shift to renewable energy at Marimekko’s headquarters and printing factory in Helsinki, Finland.
Besides this, the company has set targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions from its supply chain, focusing particularly on purchased textile materials and logistics. By using less emission-intensive materials, Marimekko aligns its practices with its sustainability strategy.
In September 2022, Marimekko committed to the Science Based Targets initiative. This commitment is now a key part of its business strategy, recognized as essential for the company’s success.
