The Seattle Mariners recently brought left-hander Brandyn Garcia into the big leagues, promoting him from the minors. As part of this move, right-hander Juan Burgos has been sent down to Triple-A Tacoma to make room on the roster, which is now fully occupied.
Brandyn Garcia, 25, was selected in the 11th round of the 2023 draft. Last season, the Mariners experimented with converting him into a starting pitcher, and he had impressive results: he pitched 116 innings with a 2.25 ERA, striking out 27% of the hitters he faced. However, this year, the team decided to use him as a reliever due to some concerns about his control and his tendency to rely heavily on just two pitches: a sinker and a slider.
His performance this season has also been solid, with a combined ERA of 3.51 over 33 1/3 innings at Double-A and Triple-A. Although he has a higher walk rate of 11.4%, he has a strikeout rate of 28.2% and a ground ball rate of 55.4%. Recently, FanGraphs ranked him as the 15th-best prospect in the Mariners’ system, while Baseball America had him at 19th.
The Mariners have relied on Gabe Speier as their primary left-handed reliever all season, with only brief appearances from Jhonathan Díaz and Tayler Saucedo. Garcia’s addition will give Seattle a second lefty in the bullpen, which could be crucial as the trade deadline approaches.
Looking ahead, the Mariners may consider further strengthening their bullpen. Garcia’s promotion is significant as he still has several options available, which makes it easier for the team to move him back to Tacoma if necessary. This flexibility could help the Mariners navigate potential trades and roster changes leading up to the deadline.
In the world of baseball analytics, the shift to using more specialized relief pitchers has become a major trend. Teams are increasingly relying on pitchers like Garcia who excel in specific situations, showing how modern strategies are reshaping the game.
