Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently faced controversy when Marko Elez resigned. His resignation came after old social media posts revealed troubling views, including self-identified racism. These posts were made under a pseudonym, which was suspended the year before when Elez joined DOGE.
Until now, not much was known about DOGE. However, their visits to federal agencies sparked discussions. Some bureaucrats described the team as young, mostly college dropouts with questionable backgrounds, doubting their qualifications to engage with federal workers.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Elez’s distressing past posts. He tweeted statements like, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” and expressed a strong dislike for marrying outside his ethnicity, even suggesting to “normalize Indian hate.” The backlash from these comments led to his resignation.
Elon Musk even conducted a poll on X, considering rehiring Elez, which many supported. Musk acknowledged Elez’s mistakes, saying, “To err is human,” emphasizing the importance of growth from errors.
Meanwhile, the issue ignited a public debate between JD Vance and Ro Khanna on social media. Vance expressed that while he disagreed with Elez’s words, he felt that past actions should not destroy a person’s future. Khanna, an Indian-American, questioned whether Vance would seek an apology for the anti-India remarks, referencing their shared concerns for their children, as both have ties to India. This comment seemed to irritate Vance, who rejected the notion of emotional manipulation in the discussion.
Additionally, journalist Katherine Long, who wrote the piece on Elez for the Journal, caught Musk’s ire. Musk criticized her work, calling her “disgusting,” amid allegations linking her to USAID.
This ongoing saga underscores the challenges of past statements in today’s political landscape and raises questions about accountability, growth, and the role of social media in shaping public perception.
