Marshall University Baseball Team Falls Short in Close Game Against JMU
The Marshall University baseball team faced a tough loss, falling 4-3 to the James Madison Dukes in their series opener in Harrisonburg, Virginia. With this game, Marshall’s record now stands at 20 wins and 25 losses.
Head coach Greg Beals pointed out that small mistakes made the difference. “The line between winning and losing is thin. We missed a few chances tonight,” he noted. The team struggled with an outfield error and a missed stolen base, which both cost them crucial runs.
Evan Botton and Mason Onate stood out at the plate, each going 2-for-3. Starting pitcher Bryce Blevins had a commendable performance, throwing seven innings and striking out six batters, despite taking his third loss of the season. Relief pitcher Charlie Krebs added to the effort with a perfect eighth inning.
The Dukes got off to a swift start. Reece Moddy hit a double, leading to three runs in the first inning, including a homer from Ike Schmidly. By the end of the first, Marshall was trailing 4-0.
Despite this rocky start, Blevins settled down. He didn’t allow any runs after the first inning and kept the Dukes’ hitters at bay.
Marshall managed to score in the second inning, thanks to a timely double from Onate that brought home AJ Havrilla. They added two more runs in the sixth, narrowing JMU’s lead.
Marshall’s next chance to even the series comes Saturday at 4 PM in Harrisonburg.
