Smith shared some good news. He noted that since 2009, the local chapter has raised over $360,000. This money has helped about 120 students by providing scholarships to attend Marshall University.

Smith, who previously worked as the CEO of Intuit and earned recognition from Fortune Magazine, took on the role of university president in early 2022. He reflected on the university’s journey, highlighting its growth from a single-room academy in 1837 to a full university by 1961. “Our aim is to be the most affordable and achievement-driven university in the country,” he said.

He also praised the athletics department for its successes. He then introduced Tony Gibson, who is excited to coach at his home state university. “It’s a dream come true,” Gibson expressed, emphasizing the pride in the Marshall football program and its unique history.

Gibson has a rich coaching background, with experience at several universities, including West Virginia and North Carolina State. He believes that personal identity matters more than mere achievements in coaching. “Who you are is way more important than what you do,” he stated.

The evening included an auction and a performance by Holly Forbes, a top 10 finalist on “The Voice.” Her singing added a special touch to the event and left attendees in good spirits. The night highlighted both the university’s ambitions and the community’s commitment to supporting its students and programs.

As Marshall University continues to evolve, its focus remains on student success both in the classroom and on the field.

In recent years, community efforts like these have become crucial. A study from the *Institute for Higher Education Policy* shows that local fundraising plays a significant role in supporting students at public universities.

It’s clear that moments like this not only showcase university milestones but also strengthen community ties, proving that when local supporters come together, great things happen for education.
