WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Food Bank recently received a generous gift of 40,000 pounds of food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This donation is part of a nationwide initiative to support 250 food banks as the country celebrates its 250th anniversary.
This year, the Kansas Food Bank has been busy. Their ‘Food for Kids’ program now assists over 7,000 children weekly. The need has grown significantly, especially among seniors. Previously, they made up about 8-10% of clients. Now, that number has jumped to around 25%.
Brian Walker, the president and CEO of Kansas Food Bank, explained, “Imagine filling up your gas tank and seeing prices at $4 a gallon when they used to be just $2. For seniors on fixed incomes, it’s hard to manage that increase.” He noted that rising costs in medicine and utility bills add to their struggles.
In addition to the food donation, volunteers from a program called ‘Just Serve’ were on hand to help pack and distribute food. This teamwork makes a big difference in the community.
Recent statistics show that food insecurity is becoming a critical issue. A report by the USDA found that about 10.5% of American households faced food shortages in 2021, a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges many families face.
