The 30th season of Major League Soccer (MLS) is here. We kicked things off with the traditional fireworks on Matchday 1, which I still lovingly refer to as “First Kick.” However, Matchday 2 often looks different. Many teams tightened their strategies to avoid the goal-fests we’ve seen in previous years. It’s almost comforting that we’re following this familiar pattern again in 2025.
This year, Charlotte FC is making waves with an unusual roster dynamic. They’ve had standout performances from unexpected players, like Andrew Privett, who became a key starter despite being a late SuperDraft pick. Meanwhile, the top draft choice, Hamady Diop, has struggled to find a place on the team. Some signings, like Serbian international Nikola Petković, worth $3 million, are rarely seeing game time, while Brandt Bronico has become essential in central midfield.
Charlotte spent considerable resources to recruit Tim Ream as a left-back and Bill Tuiloma as a reliable sub, which hasn’t panned out quite as planned. Their designated player (DP) signings have been a mixed bag, with Liel Abada yet to show potential as a game-changer. Enter Wilfried Zaha—a player with immense talent. He made an impact, especially in the second half of a 2-0 victory over Atlanta United, proving he can spark creativity and lead attacks.
Zaha’s presence has raised expectations for Charlotte FC. Head coach Dean Smith noted, “He’s the type of player we were missing last season.” The challenge now will be to utilize his skills in varied game situations, rather than relying on counterattacks. Conversations around Zaha’s influence reveal that he might be the answer to unlocking their potential.
On the other side, Atlanta United needs to regroup. They were effective in the first half but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Emmanuel Latte Lath’s absence in important plays overwhelmed their offense. Alexey Miranchuk also struggled to leave his mark on the game, raising concerns about his role within the team as they search for ways to create more opportunities.
Meanwhile, the San Jose Earthquakes have turned heads with a solid start. Under Bruce Arena, they secured six points in two matches, including a 4-0 rout over a jet-lagged Real Salt Lake. Their recent win against Sporting KC, despite being down a man for much of the game, showcased their resilience and determination.
The Earthquakes’ formation has provided a robust defense, protecting key players like Chicho Arango and Josef Martínez. Young midfielder Beau Leroux has emerged as a surprising standout. Arena praised his team’s determination but acknowledged the need for improvement. San Jose faces an easier early schedule, but they are showing promise like they haven’t since 2012.
Over in Philadelphia, the Union looked formidable, scoring four goals against Orlando City and then repeating the feat against Cincinnati in a convincing win. Their attack is dynamic and problematically for opponents; while they concede chances, their offensive firepower makes them a thrilling team to watch.
Real Salt Lake maintained their incredible home record against Seattle Sounders, with RSL grinding out a 2-0 victory. Diego Luna played as a creative No. 10, showing his potential, though the game lacked the flair we expect from MLS matches due to the overarching challenges of balancing cup competitions with regular season play.
Lastly, the Red Bulls made quick work of Nashville with a 2-0 win, and the Revs struggled against the Crew in a dismal showing marked by a lack of offensive firepower. Chicago Fire settled for a 2-2 draw against D.C. United, sparking discussions about their defensive organization and ball control as they seek improvement in their execution.
As teams adapt to the season’s demands, we’ll continue to see how strategies evolve and what talents will rise to the occasion. Each match reveals more about where teams stand, and with plenty of soccer still to play, it’s shaping up to be an exciting year in MLS.
