On Friday, the Philadelphia 76ers ended their seven-game losing streak with a nail-biting 132-129 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were at the top of the league. Tyrese Maxey and Paul George were the stars of the night, combining for 59 points. George hit six three-pointers and scored 30 points, while Maxey added 29 points.
The Sixers needed this victory after falling out of playoff contention with a disappointing 15-27 record. Their previous game had been a tough loss to the Denver Nuggets, which ended in a 144-109 blowout.
Coach Nick Nurse was pleased with how the team bounced back. “Sometimes those games happen,” he said, referring to the Denver loss. He praised the players for their preparation and teamwork. “Everybody contributed tonight,” he noted.
The game was thrilling, with the lead changing 30 times. In the final moments, the Sixers took an eight-point lead. But the Cavaliers fought back, closing the gap to just one point with only 12 seconds left after a three-pointer from Ty Jerome. Maxey’s four successful free throws in the last moments secured the win for Philadelphia.
Maxey reflected on the game, saying, “Denver came out and punched us in the mouth, but we had been playing well before that. Tonight we closed it out, and that was good for us.”
Four other Sixers scored in double figures. Kelly Oubre Jr. stood out with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals, while Eric Gordon and Justin Edwards contributed five points each.
On the other side, Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 37 points, followed by Ty Jerome with 33 and Darius Garland with 26.
In other NBA action that evening, the Memphis Grizzlies achieved a solid 139-126 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, marking their fifth straight win and improving to 30-15. Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets lost to the Portland Trail Blazers 102-97.
