Inside the Heated Showdown: When Trump Officials and Elon Musk Faced Off

Marco Rubio was upset. He sat in the Cabinet Room of the White House, right next to the president, listening to Elon Musk’s sharp criticisms.

Musk fired off accusations, saying Rubio hadn’t done enough to reduce his staff. “You’ve fired nobody,” he said, adding that the only person fired was from Musk’s own team.

Rubio had been angry with Musk for weeks. Musk’s team had effectively shut down the United States Agency for International Development, an agency that Rubio was supposed to oversee. During this intense cabinet meeting, attended by President Trump and around 20 others, Rubio finally expressed his frustrations.

He argued that Musk was not being honest. Rubio pointed out that over 1,500 State Department employees had taken early retirement due to buyouts. “Doesn’t that count as layoffs?” he asked. He even sarcastically questioned whether Musk wanted him to rehire those workers just to fire them again for show. Then, Rubio shared his plans for reorganizing the State Department, hoping to prove that he was taking action.
