Meet Ashton Newton ’26: The Future of Education Awaits

Ashton Newton, a rising junior from Medina, Ohio, is the 2025 recipient of The Claudia E. and Charles F. Cornett Creative Teaching Merit Scholarship. This scholarship honors education majors or minors who show creativity and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

Ashton is not just focused on his studies. He’s working towards dual licensure in education for grades P-5 and as an intervention specialist. He’s also a member of the Wittenberg Baseball team and is actively involved on campus. He helps during Welcome Week, leads the campus spirit team, and serves as vice president of Best Buddies. Plus, he works at the school’s strength and fitness center.

His journey to teaching began in high school when he volunteered in gym classes at a local elementary school. He found joy in connecting with students and wanted to make a meaningful difference in their lives.

He credits his Wittenberg professors for shaping his teaching style. “They’ve pushed me to think outside the box and create engaging methods that foster trust and connection,” he says. Their support has opened doors and provided experiences he never anticipated.

After graduating, Ashton plans to pursue a master’s degree in physical education, aiming to teach elementary school and possibly coach baseball. “Receiving the Cornett Scholarship is a huge honor,” he shares. “It drives me to excel in everything I do. This scholarship symbolizes my commitment to becoming an inspiring educator and leader.”

Recent studies highlight the importance of creativity in teaching. According to a report from the National Education Association, creative teaching strategies lead to improved student engagement and better learning outcomes. This aligns perfectly with Ashton’s approach, emphasizing how effective teaching can transform classrooms and inspire students.

The recognition he receives through the Cornett Scholarship not only motivates him but also reflects a growing trend where innovative teaching is becoming vital in education systems today.
