Meet Elyse Schlump: Cleary University’s New Women’s Basketball Coach Leading the Team to Success!

A former coach from Concordia University is stepping into a new role at Cleary University. Elyse Schlump is now the head coach for women’s basketball at Cleary.

Schlump spent three seasons at Concordia, where she built a strong record of 51 wins and 37 losses. In league play, her team achieved 42 wins and 20 losses. Under her guidance, the Concordia Cardinals reached the WHAC semifinals in the 2023-24 season and made it to the quarterfinals in the previous two seasons. Her coaching also led to several players earning accolades, including five First Team All WHAC selections.

Max Ballinger, Cleary’s Director of Athletics, expressed excitement about Schlump joining the team. He valued her commitment to developing student athletes and her impressive coaching background. “Her energy and leadership are exactly what we need,” he noted.

Schlump’s journey in basketball began at Concordia, where she not only played but also served as a graduate assistant for the women’s team. Before Concordia, she held positions at Skidmore College and Marist University, gaining valuable experience in coaching and operations.

Reflecting on her new role, Schlump stated, “I’m excited to lead such a talented group of young women. I look forward to being part of the Cleary community and helping the women’s basketball program grow.”

She takes over from Kevin Mondro, who laid the groundwork for Cleary’s women’s basketball team. Cleary only started its competitive program in the 2023-24 season. Mondro has since moved on to an assistant coaching role at the University of Detroit Mercy.

With her track record and enthusiasm, Schlump aims to take Cleary’s women’s basketball team to the next level. Recent trends in women’s sports show a surge in support and participation. A 2022 report highlighted that women’s sports viewership has doubled over the past five years. This growth bodes well for programs like Cleary’s, as more fans and opportunities arise for female athletes.

As the landscape of women’s sports evolves, coaches like Schlump play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the game. The investment in women’s programs not only empowers athletes but also cultivates leaders within communities.
