Meet Larissa Jacquez: Duke University’s Inspiring Blue Devil Star

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke softball team is gearing up for an exciting season, welcoming back 12 players while also bringing in 10 fresh faces—six freshmen and four transfers. This includes junior pitcher Larissa Jacquez, who joins the team after two impressive years at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Originally from Eagle Pass, Texas, Jacquez had a standout sophomore year. She led her team with 151 strikeouts, pitched 148.2 innings, and finished the season with a remarkable 1.65 ERA, ranking her 12th in the nation. One of her shining moments was a game against East Texas A&M, where she struck out a career-high 14 batters, helping her team secure a decisive victory.

In a recent chat, Jacquez shared her excitement about joining Duke. “Playing for Duke means everything to me. The culture here is amazing, and I’m thrilled to compete on the field with these talented girls,” she said.

When asked what draws her to softball, she stated, “I love playing and competing at the highest level.” Interestingly, Jacquez noted how different Duke is from her hometown. “In Eagle Pass, everyone knows each other,” she explained. “Here in Durham, you meet new people and can be part of various communities.”

Outside of softball, Jacquez enjoys spending time with her teammates, particularly going shopping.

Women’s sports, particularly softball, have gained momentum in recent years, with participation rates increasing. According to the NCAA, female student-athletes have increased by 60% since 1996. This growth reflects a broader cultural shift toward supporting women’s athletics.
