In Smithtown, New York, America’s VetDogs is teaming up with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Monsters to welcome a special pup named Reggie. Reggie is the NBA’s first team service dog in training, and his journey is just beginning!
Reggie, an 11-week-old yellow Labrador Retriever, will be cared for by the Cavaliers and Monsters as he grows. For the next 14 to 18 months, he will learn basic skills and socialization. He will be part of community events and even attend some games, helping him build confidence and calmness.
This collaboration marks the first time an NBA team has joined America’s VetDogs’ Puppy with a Purpose® initiative. This program trains service dogs at no cost to veterans and first responders with disabilities. The Cavaliers’ involvement helps mitigate the high costs of raising and training these helpful dogs while showing their support for local heroes.
“We are thrilled to introduce Reggie to our community,” said Pam Frasco, VP of Social Impact for the Cavaliers. “Supporting local veterans is crucial to our mission, and we’re excited to aid America’s VetDogs in their important work.”
Once Reggie finishes his early training, he will return to America’s VetDogs campus in Smithtown for advanced training. After graduation, he will be matched with a veteran or first responder who needs his support. The dogs from this program can significantly improve mobility, independence, and companionship for their handlers.
Mark your calendars! Reggie will make his debut with the Cavaliers on February 2, 2025, during a game against the Dallas Mavericks. His first appearance with the Monsters will happen shortly after, on February 23 against the Belleville Senators.
