Two friends who are dedicated to protecting the environment recently won a national Climate Ambassador award for their impressive achievements in promoting biodiversity. Brian Meredith, a beef farmer from Meredith Organic Farm in Laois, and Vito Romito, who works with ESB Fisheries Conservation, were recognized at the An Taisce awards ceremony.
Their journey began as friends passionate about innovative environmental projects. Brian and Vito have organized various initiatives, including litter clean-ups, environmental film screenings, and workshops focused on methane reduction. Their combined efforts highlight their commitment to making a positive impact on the planet.
This year, they celebrated both Biodiversity Week and Heritage Week by offering public farm walks and informative talks. These events provided science-based insights into biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of trees in farming, nutrient recycling, and the roles of pollinators and insects. Attendees learned about the positive effects of organic farming practices, such as avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, while observing the farm’s native hedgerows, broadleaf woodlands, and organically raised cattle.
Among their notable projects, Brian and Vito revitalized a local stream, improving its health for freshwater invertebrates and fish. This successful restoration not only enhanced biodiversity but also underscored the significance of clean waterways for local ecosystems.
The duo received their award in a historic venue, Tailors’ Hall in Dublin, on November 22. The ceremony honored only ten Climate Ambassadors nationwide, showcasing the importance of grassroots efforts in combating climate change.
Recent surveys indicate that public awareness of environmental issues is growing, with 75% of people believing they can make a difference through individual actions. This trend mirrors the work of Brian and Vito, who demonstrate that even small local initiatives can contribute to broader environmental goals.
