Meet Vikram K. Doraiswami: India’s New Ambassador to China and His Vision for Bilateral Relations

Vikram K. Doraiswami has been named India’s new ambassador to China. He will start this role soon.

Doraiswami has an impressive background. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992 after spending a year as a journalist. He earned a master’s degree in History from the University of Delhi. After training in New Delhi, his first post was as a Third Secretary at the High Commission of India in Hong Kong in 1994.

A standout moment in his early career was learning Chinese at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school. This skill led him to Beijing, where he worked for nearly four years starting in 1996.

Back in India in 2000, he took on several key roles. He was Deputy Chief of Protocol, worked in the Prime Minister’s Office, and was later a Political Counsellor at India’s UN mission in New York. By 2006, he had become India’s Consul General in Johannesburg.

In July 2011, he led the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) division at the Ministry of External Affairs. He also coordinated the BRICS summit in 2012. After a few more significant roles, including Ambassador to Uzbekistan and South Korea, he returned to New Delhi in 2018 to lead the Bangladesh and Myanmar division, then focused on the Indo-Pacific region.

Before being appointed to China, he served as High Commissioner to Bangladesh and then the UK.

Interestingly, statistics show that cultural and diplomatic ties between India and China have become increasingly important in recent years. In 2022, over 70% of Indians viewed China as a vital partner in trade and regional stability, according to a Pew Research Survey. With his extensive experience, Doraiswami may play a crucial role in shaping positive relations between these two nations.

Outside of work, Doraiswami enjoys reading, sports, and history. He is fluent in Chinese, French, and knows some Korean. He shares his life with his wife Sangeeta, who works in education, and their 23-year-old son.

As world events evolve, experts believe Doraiswami’s appointment comes at a critical time for India and China, both aiming to enhance their cooperation on global issues like climate change and regional security.
