Meet Your New AI Companions: Microsoft Introduces Chat-Ready Copilot Faces!

Microsoft is making strides to enhance user experiences with its AI assistant, Copilot. A recent addition, the experimental “Portraits” feature, introduces animated faces for more engaging interactions. Currently available in the US, UK, and Canada, users can choose from 40 stylized avatars that bring conversations to life with natural expressions during voice chats.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman shared the news on X, highlighting that many users feel more at ease chatting with a friendly face instead of text alone. This feature builds on past attempts to make Copilot more relatable and accessible. Unlike previous designs that resembled cartoonish blobs, Portraits uses human-like features to foster a more authentic connection.

The technology behind this innovation is called VASA-1, developed by Microsoft Research. It allows the AI to generate real-time facial expressions and lip sync using just one image, eliminating the need for complex 3D modeling.

Each avatar is stylized for variety, ensuring that while the visuals are unique, users still receive the trusted intelligence and safety features Copilot is known for. However, the feature is currently limited to users aged 18 and older, with certain daily limits and reminders that they are interacting with an AI.

Recent studies indicate that human-like avatars can significantly enhance user experience with AI. According to a report by the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, adding a human-like presence can increase user trust and comfort during interactions with technology. With this in mind, Microsoft’s Portraits feature could very well set a new standard in AI communication, making it feel more immersive and personal.
