Michigan Climbs to No. 3 in AP Top 25 Basketball Poll: MSU and Iowa State Break into the Top 10!

Michigan has risen to No. 3 in the Associated Press men’s basketball rankings. They follow Purdue and Arizona, who hold the top two spots. Purdue earned a whopping 40 first-place votes, while Arizona received six and Michigan got 15 after a strong performance at the Players Era Championship.

Duke and UConn remain in the top five, while Louisville sits at No. 6. Michigan State climbed four spots to No. 7, and Houston dropped to No. 8 after a loss to then-No. 17 Tennessee.

Last year, Michigan reached the Sweet 16 under coach Dusty May and looks poised to compete for the title again. They started the Las Vegas tournament with impressive victories: a 94-54 win over San Diego State, a 102-72 rout of No. 21 Auburn, and a staggering 101-61 defeat of Gonzaga. This means they’ve won three games by a total of 110 points.

Yaxel Lendeborg, a forward for Michigan, confidently stated, “Today was to put the world on notice that we’re here to be the best team in the nation.”

Teams on the Rise

Vanderbilt made the biggest move of the week, jumping seven spots after winning the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. Iowa State also climbed five spots, fueled by three wins at the Players Era.

Michigan State’s strong performances against East Carolina and No. 16 North Carolina pushed them up four places. Tennessee saw a slight rise too, gaining four spots after beating Houston.

Teams on the Decline

On the downside, St. John’s experienced the largest fall, dropping nine spots after a mixed week. The reigning national champion, Florida, slipped five places following a loss to TCU. Alabama also dropped after losing to Gonzaga.

New Faces in the Poll

Kansas re-entered the rankings after three wins, while Southern California showed impressive form in the Maui Invitational. Unfortunately, UCLA fell out after losing to California in the Empire Classic.

Conference Insights

The Southeastern Conference continues to dominate the rankings with seven teams in the AP Top 25. The Big 12 and Big Ten each have six ranked teams, while the Atlantic Coast Conference has three and the Big East has two.

Basketball experts emphasize how close this season is shaping up to be. With data from recent surveys, fans seem more engaged than ever, often taking to social media to discuss their favorite teams and players. It’s a thrilling time for college basketball fans!
