Milwaukee – Riverside University High School will be closed on Tuesday, September 2, due to a chemical spill from old science equipment.

Milwaukee Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Eduardo Galván announced that students should not come to school on Tuesday. The cleanup process is ongoing, and the school aims to ensure a safe environment before classes resume.

Although Tuesday is the first day for most schools in the district, Riverside is set to welcome students back on Wednesday, September 3. Staff, however, should report on Tuesday to prepare for the students’ return.

Galván reassured students, staff, and parents about their safety. He noted, “We know this is an inconvenience. Your health and safety are our priority. Our building passed air tests after the spill, but some areas will remain closed as we continue the cleanup.”

In general, chemical spills in schools can be alarming. According to a recent survey by the National School Safety Center, about 25% of schools have faced some form of hazardous material incident in the past decade.
