Morehead State University celebrated a memorable moment at the 2026 Spring Commencement on May 9. The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program graduated its largest group yet, highlighting its significant growth and influence in the region.
“The success of this cohort shows the hard work of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Dr. Nicola Mason, dean of the Volgenau College of Education. “We’re proud to celebrate these leaders ready to make a difference in their fields and communities.”
Graduates of the Ed.D. program dive into challenging coursework focused on leadership and innovation. Many juggle full-time jobs and personal lives while pursuing their degrees.
Dr. Tim Gibbs, a 2026 graduate who originally earned his bachelor’s in political science from Morehead in 1991, reflected on his journey. “This is my last day as a student at Morehead. A journey that started in 1987 comes to an end,” he shared. “Morehead has always been part of my life and my family’s story.”
Gibbs, who is the CEO of Four Corners Economic Development in New Mexico, credited the university for opening doors he never thought possible. He emphasized the importance of education and economic development in empowering people and helping families break cycles.
“Morehead State has changed lives for generations, including mine,” he explained. His experience highlights the Ed.D. program’s goal to develop leaders who not only excel academically but also positively impact others.
Another significant achievement was Thomas Ray becoming the first student to complete the Career & Technical Education (CTE) track in the Ed.D. program. His capstone focused on “The Impact of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) on High School Students and Leadership Development.” Ray’s accomplishment marks a key moment in advancing leadership in technical education.
“This milestone is about more than numbers; it’s about creating positive change,” Mason added.
Starting in Fall 2026, the Ed.D. program will be fully online, broadening access for those seeking a quality doctoral program in educational leadership. This change reflects the university’s commitment to building relationships with students and the community. The online format will include optional in-person events for networking.
