Soccer fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Getting to the World Cup games in the New York-New Jersey area just got a lot cheaper. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced significant price cuts for shuttle bus and rail tickets.
Shuttle bus fares have dropped from $80 to just $20. NJ Transit rail fares have also seen a reduction, now at $98, down from $150. These changes aim to make attending the matches more affordable and accessible.
About 20% of shuttle tickets will be set aside for New York residents. Buses will depart from three Midtown locations, including the Port Authority Bus Terminal, plus one in North Jersey. Exact Midtown locations will be finalized soon.
Hochul expressed her commitment to making the World Cup accessible. “Getting to the World Cup should be as accessible as possible,” she stated. She also mentioned that $6 million in state funds is backing these fare cuts. Fans who have already purchased the higher-priced tickets will receive a refund of $60.
Sherrill highlighted that the additional discount for rail tickets comes without using taxpayer money. Instead, corporate partners like DoorDash and FanDuel are helping cover costs. She emphasized the excitement of showcasing New Jersey to a global audience during this world-class event.
The World Cup at MetLife Stadium will run from June 11 to July 19, including the final match. With ticket prices for the actual games running into the hundreds or thousands of dollars, public watch parties are being planned in the region to allow residents to enjoy the games together.
In an effort to promote public transport use, the New York New Jersey Host Committee strongly encourages fans to avoid driving, as there will be no general spectator parking on matchdays. This approach not only eases congestion but also highlights the importance of community spirit in enjoying such a large-scale event.
