Elon Musk recently stirred the pot by discussing Social Security, claiming it’s filled with fraud. He believes that cutting federal benefit programs should be a major focus in reducing government spending.
Musk, who is working closely with former President Trump, suggested that the government could save between $500 billion and $700 billion by eliminating waste. He commented on Fox Business, noting, “Most of the federal spending is entitlements. That’s the big one to eliminate.”
His comments about Social Security and similar programs may raise eyebrows among politicians from both parties. Musk has a reputation for a hard-hitting approach, already facing criticism for aggressive layoffs and program cuts across his businesses.
Musk’s views on entitlement fraud are notably higher than official estimates. According to the Social Security inspector general, improper payments from 2015 to 2022 totaled about $71.8 billion, representing less than 1% of all benefits paid during that period. Musk also claimed there are “20 million people who are definitely dead marked as alive in the Social Security database.” The acting Social Security commissioner has dismissed such claims, stating those individuals aren’t necessarily receiving benefits.
His skepticism towards Social Security is not new. Musk has previously described the program as “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.” While Trump has said he will protect Social Security from cuts, Musk’s comments suggest a different approach. He even accused federal entitlements of attracting illegal immigrants, implying that programs are used to influence voting demographics.
The conversation took place in a White House setting, moderated by Larry Kudlow, who was an economic adviser to Trump. Musk expressed surprise at his role in the administration, saying, “Frankly, I can’t believe I’m here doing this. It’s kind of bizarre.” Despite his wealth and successful businesses, Musk has taken on the responsibility of potentially reshaping government policy.
While Trump has shown support for Musk, promising a more precise approach (like using a “scalpel” instead of a “hatchet”), the billionaire’s public statements have been limited. Recently, he used his social media platform, X, to speak on various topics, including criticizing the Democratic Party and making bold claims about his own service as a source for news.
Republicans have long aimed to reduce the federal government’s size, and many support Musk’s involvement. Rep. Richard Hudson stated that people are tired of government waste and fraud, believing Musk’s role could lead to significant change.
However, there’s pushback. Some Republican lawmakers have boasted about successfully blocking budget cuts. For example, Rep. Tom Cole announced that crucial federal offices in Oklahoma, which provide essential services, would remain open, showcasing a commitment to local needs.
Public opinion on Musk’s role is mixed. A recent poll indicated that about half of Americans viewed his influence in Trump’s administration negatively. Another survey revealed a divide in perceptions, with many unsure if his actions truly eliminate waste or necessary services.
