Nasarawa Launches Exciting Tree Planting Initiative to Combat Climate Change

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule kicked off a new tree planting campaign aimed at battling climate change. This event took place in Karu Local Government Area, where the governor emphasized its importance for both the environment and the people’s quality of life.

Sule explained that the initiative aligns with the goals set by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to promote environmental conservation. He believes that planting trees will help with erosion control, beautifying the state, and creating a healthier living space.

In addition to this campaign, the state government has distributed waste bins across all 13 local governments. Proper waste management is crucial, as improperly handled waste can lead to more significant environmental problems and even contribute to climate change. When managed well, waste can be converted into agriculture and energy resources, boosting the economy.

During the event, concerns about traffic congestion in Karu were raised. Governor Sule mentioned that the state is seeking federal funding to create alternative routes and plans for a flyover or underpass to ease the flow of traffic.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo, urged residents to work with the government to maintain a clean environment. She warned that improper waste disposal can lead to diseases and environmental disasters, urging people to utilize the designated trash bins.

Local leaders, including the Esu Karu, Luka Panya-Baba, echoed these concerns, pointing out that blocked roads in Old Karu and Rugan Madaki are causing significant issues for motorists and residents alike. They called on the government to address these traffic challenges promptly.

Interestingly, this tree-planting initiative is part of a broader national effort. Vice-President Kashim Shettima announced plans to plant 20 billion trees in the upcoming rainy season as part of a federal reforestation drive. This ambitious project aims to address environmental issues while fostering agricultural growth.
