NASA’s Juno spacecraft has observed a remarkable volcanic event on Jupiter’s moon, Io. This eruption, which took place on December 27, 2024, was the most powerful seen in our solar system, spreading over 40,400 square miles (65,000 square kilometers). What’s incredible is that this wasn’t just one volcano erupting but multiple ones, all lighting up simultaneously. This suggests there’s a hidden network of magma beneath Io’s surface that connects these eruptions.
Experts estimate that this explosive event released between 140 and 260 terawatts of energy, dwarfing the previous record of 80 terawatts from Io’s Surt volcano in 2001. To put that in perspective, the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens released about 52 terawatts.
Alessandro Mura from the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics explains, “The synchronized eruptions suggest it was one massive event traveling through the moon’s interior.” This timing hints at volcanic sources interconnected by magma, almost like a sponge filled with molten rock. Interestingly, not all volcanoes erupted, implying some may be linked to different magma systems.
The volcanic activity was captured by Juno’s Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM), designed to study Jupiter’s atmosphere but also capable of detecting heat from volcanic activity on Io. Juno has been exploring Jupiter and its major moons, known as the Galilean moons, during recent close fly-bys. Future encounters will help scientists identify new lava flows and ash deposits resulting from this monumental eruption.
The findings were published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets on January 10, 2025. This eruption not only showcases the incredible dynamics of Io but also provides data that could enhance our understanding of volcanic processes on other celestial bodies.
