Vernon is getting some road improvements that will start right after the long weekend. City crews will begin building a new roundabout at Silver Star Road and Phoenix Drive on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 a.m. This construction will lead to some road closures beginning Wednesday, April 23. Residents who usually use Phoenix Drive will need to take a detour through Foothills Drive.
The construction schedule is from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and there might be some weekend work, although Silver Star Road will still be open for through traffic. This roundabout will bring several upgrades, including new sidewalks, curbs, better street lighting, and improvements to drainage systems.
On the same day, work will also start at the intersection of Alexis Park Drive and Gateby Place for a new watermain. This construction will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work. During this phase, traffic patterns will change to allow for single-alternating traffic and some lane shifts. Drivers on 32nd Avenue heading to Alexis Park Drive will be redirected along 38th Street. Additionally, Gateby will have a full road closure from April 25 to May 2.
To minimize disruption, there will be temporary access for delivery vehicles, garbage collection, and emergency services between Schubert Centre and Catherine Gardens. Residential and non-commercial vehicles can still use the access gate next to Gateby Care Centre. However, transit stops on Alexis Park Drive will be closed during this time. As construction begins, city officials remind everyone to drive carefully and pay attention to traffic control measures. Engaging with these changes now can help ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced road safety in the long run.
