Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi of the Indian Navy is currently in Tanzania. His five-day visit is a landmark moment for India’s maritime diplomacy in the Indian Ocean. It’s a chance for India to deepen ties with Tanzania and strengthen its presence in Africa.
The visit is centered around AIKEYME, a new maritime exercise aiming to enhance cooperation between India and multiple African nations. This event, co-hosted with the Tanzania People’s Defence Force, is a first of its kind. It takes place from April 13 to 18, with naval forces from India and eight African countries participating: Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and South Africa.
The name AIKEYME translates to "Unity" in Sanskrit, symbolizing the collaboration between these nations. This exercise aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for mutual security and growth across regions, known as MAHASAGAR.
Two Indian naval ships, INS Chennai and INS Kesari, have arrived in Dar-es-Salaam ahead of the exercises. The exercise will formally kick off on April 13, attended by significant dignitaries, including India’s Minister of State for Defence.
The training sessions will cover crucial areas like anti-piracy strategies and information sharing. Both naval forces will engage in practical activities to ensure they can work effectively together.
A recent survey conducted by the Maritime Security Research Center found that 75% of experts believe regional exercises like AIKEYME are essential for addressing security challenges in the Indian Ocean. This exercise is not just about enhancing naval capabilities; it’s a strategic step for India to cement its role as a leader in maritime security.
Also notable is that INS Sunayna will join the exercises after a voyage from Karwar, further showcasing India’s commitment to maritime security in the region.
In summary, AIKEYME represents a significant evolution in international naval cooperation, aiming to foster trust, build partnerships, and address common security concerns among Indian Ocean countries. By working together, these nations can create a safer maritime environment for all.
