LAS VEGAS — The NBA is exploring the possibility of expanding its franchise lineup. Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the board of governors has asked for a thorough review of all aspects related to expansion, both economic and non-economic.

“We still need to conduct a lot of analysis,” Silver said. “Nothing has been decided, and there’s no set timeline yet.”

To tackle this issue, the league will combine two advisory groups. The advisory finance committee will lead the charge, while the audit and strategy committee will focus on financial implications.

Currently, the NBA has 30 teams. The last expansion occurred when the Charlotte Bobcats, now the Hornets, joined in the 2004-05 season. Since then, the value of franchises has soared.

If the league had expanded five years ago, Silver mentioned they would have “underpriced the market” for new teams, highlighting how unpredictable these valuations can be.

“The challenge is not just understanding the current market but also forecasting future trends,” Silver explained.

One major concern is local media rights. Some regional sports networks are struggling, affecting revenue streams for existing teams. Silver emphasized the importance of understanding local broadcasting before expanding. “It wouldn’t make sense to hand a franchise to a new city without ensuring they can share games with fans,” he said.

Currently, Seattle and Las Vegas are frequently mentioned as top expansion contenders. Silver remarked, “We are now engaging in this analysis more seriously than we ever have before. However, it’s just the beginning, and it’s too early to predict pricing or timing.”

Recent polls show that nearly 70% of basketball fans support the idea of bringing teams back to places like Seattle, where the SuperSonics were once a beloved franchise.
