Nebraska’s volleyball team recently impressed fans with a bold move. Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly decided to change up her starting lineup. This shift came before a big game against No. 18 Creighton. The Huskers faced Grand Canyon, and the fresh faces delivered, leading to a decisive 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 win in front of more than 8,500 fans.
Using many freshmen paid off. They accounted for 42 of the team’s 50 kills. Freshman setter Campbell Flynn led the offense, a notable change since Bergen Reilly didn’t start. Other new players included Skyler Pierce and Manaia Ogbechie, who also contributed significantly.
Coach Busboom Kelly aimed to build confidence in her younger players. She emphasized that every player should be ready to step up when needed. This philosophy reflects a growing trend in sports where coaches seek to strengthen the team’s depth. In fact, a recent survey by the NCAA found that depth is critical for success, especially when facing tough schedules.
“Every player is important,” said Busboom Kelly. “We need everyone prepared for big moments.” Her strategy isn’t just about the game; it’s about fostering a community within the team. The players understand this. Sigler, a freshman, mentioned how fun it is to play alongside teammates who are also her classmates.
Reflecting on their teamwork, Sigler said, “We practice together every day, building those connections.” This camaraderie can be a vital asset throughout the season.
In the match against Grand Canyon, the first set showcased the Huskers’ dominance with a .533 hitting percentage. This is a significant statistic that highlights their efficiency on the court. The home victory was their 49th in a row, reinforcing their status as a powerhouse in college volleyball.
The next challenge will be an exciting match against Creighton. As Nebraska continues to showcase their depth, it will be interesting to see how this youthful energy plays into their larger strategy.
As they move forward, expect to see more of this refreshed lineup in action, as it might just change the game for the Huskers this season. For more insights on Nebraska’s volleyball program, check out Nebraska Volleyball Season Central.
