New Civil Lawsuit Alleges Sexual Assault Against BYU Quarterback Jake Retzlaff: What You Need to Know

A woman from Salt Lake County has accused Jake Retzlaff, the starting quarterback for Brigham Young University, of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit. The alleged incident took place in November 2023 after they communicated on social media for about a month. She is seeking damages for battery, assault, and emotional distress.

Retzlaff, who has not faced any criminal charges, has denied the allegations through his attorney, who described him as a “nice young man” and stated that they will work through the legal process to prove his innocence.

In her lawsuit, identified as Jane Doe A.G., the woman claims she visited Retzlaff’s home with a friend, but stayed behind when her friend left. They were watching a movie when things escalated, leading to unwanted advances from Retzlaff. She stated she was frightened and attempted to call for help, but her phone was dead. When she asked him to stop, she alleges he proceeded to assault her.

Afterward, she went to a hospital for a rape kit exam and reported the incident to the Provo police. Initially, she did not reveal Retzlaff’s name to the police, fearing further repercussions.

This case highlights ongoing issues around sexual violence and the legal system’s treatment of victims. A 2021 study by the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) shows that only 25% of sexual assault cases are reported to law enforcement. Many survivors often feel intimidated to come forward, fearing they won’t receive justice.

The conversation surrounding sexual assault is growing, especially in public forums and social media. Movements like #MeToo have helped raise awareness and foster support for survivors, but there remains a long way to go for systemic change.

Historically, society has often blamed victims, which can deter individuals from speaking out. The legal and support structures in place must evolve to create safer environments for those affected.

As the case unfolds, it will not only impact Retzlaff’s career but also contribute to broader discussions on accountability and the importance of believing and supporting survivors. It’s a reminder that everyone’s story matters and that making genuine changes in society is essential.
