New York AG Sues Trump Administration Over Offshore Wind Project Halt
New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. The case focuses on the administration’s decision to stop two major offshore wind projects, which were set to provide clean energy for over a million homes in New York.
James argues that the U.S. Department of the Interior’s recent move to suspend construction was both arbitrary and unfounded. This decision impacts the Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind projects, which underwent more than a decade of safety and security reviews. James claims this halt jeopardizes the state’s economy and energy goals, urging the court to act quickly.
“New Yorkers deserve clean, reliable energy, good-paying jobs, and a government that follows the law,” she explained. This action, she insists, threatens both workers and the state’s climate goals.
The Interior Department, along with its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, hasn’t commented publicly because of the ongoing litigation. They previously stated that the suspension was necessary due to national security concerns, such as radar interference from large turbine blades.
Historically, support for offshore wind energy has been growing in the U.S. Recent data shows that offshore wind capacity could reach 30 gigawatts by 2030, enough to power 10 million homes. Empire Wind, located about 14 miles off Long Island, is about 60% complete and is expected to power over 500,000 homes. Similarly, Sunrise Wind, about 30 miles east of Montauk, is expected to supply energy for around 600,000 homes. Both projects are vital for New York’s clean energy targets.
Additionally, both developers have initiated their own legal actions against the administration. States like Connecticut and Rhode Island have also joined the fight and are challenging the halt on their offshore wind developments.
