New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched a new tool for residents to report federal immigration enforcement activities. This came just after a sizable ICE raid in Chinatown that upset many locals and sparked protests.
At a recent press conference, a congressman shared that four American citizens were detained for nearly a day following the raid. Protests erupted in the city soon after. James emphasized that “every New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation” when introducing the reporting portal.
The portal allows New Yorkers to submit photos and videos of any ICE activity, along with location details. However, users must agree that any submitted materials might be used publicly or in legal contexts.
The Chinatown raid involved over 50 federal agents and occurred in a busy area known for its markets selling counterfeit goods. Witnesses captured videos showing armed agents detaining individuals and pushing back onlookers. An armored vehicle also patrolled the scene.
Speaking with immigrant rights advocates, Congressman Dan Goldman stated that detaining U.S. citizens in such a manner is unacceptable. He criticized the operation, suggesting it aimed to create fear rather than enhance safety. All four citizens were released with no charges.
The reaction has been swift and fierce. All major mayoral candidates criticized the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul. Candidate Zohran Mamdani highlighted the authoritarian nature of the actions taken. Local immigrant rights leader Murad Awawdeh labeled the operation a terror tactic against working families and communities.
Critics are particularly alarmed because despite ICE’s claims that they don’t detain U.S. citizens, reports show that over 170 have been held against their will by ICE since the start of the second Trump administration. In recent months, raids, including one on an immigrant shelter, have surged in New York and across the country.
Concerns have also been raised about treatment within ICE facilities, including a recent ACLU report alleging medical neglect of pregnant women. As these events unfold, the tension between communities and immigration enforcement continues to grow.
