LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The NJCU softball team faced off against Gwynedd Mercy on March 11, wrapping up the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a 6–1 loss at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
The Gothic Knights struggled, managing only six hits compared to the Griffins’ eleven. Both teams committed two errors, but it was Gwynedd Mercy that seized the early lead. In the first inning, a triple drove in a run, putting the Griffins ahead 1–0. They added another run in the third through a combination of a triple and a sacrifice fly.
The Griffins broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs after three hits and a defensive error that pushed their lead to 6–0.
NJCU finally scored in the sixth. Junior Danika Borza hit a single, and freshman Natalie Santiago Rivera pinch ran, advancing to third on a throwing error. Junior Emma Grochowski then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Rivera to score and bringing the game to 6–1. Grochowski ended up with a solid performance, finishing 2-for-2 with the team’s only RBI.
On the mound, junior Maggie Martin pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out three. Borza closed out the game, allowing one run on four hits in her 2.2 innings of relief.
Gwynedd Mercy had standout performances, particularly from Hannah Smith and Ashlyn Merz, who each contributed two RBIs. Smith also scored twice. The Griffins showcased their power with three triples, two doubles, and even an inside-the-park home run.
Mckenzie Price secured the win for Gwynedd Mercy, pitching a complete game while only allowing one run and striking out three batters.
