The North County Food Bank in Wheeler is facing a crucial transition. In October, it must leave its current location. Over the past year, the Food Bank has searched for a new place to store and distribute food. Unfortunately, finding a suitable existing building proved difficult. As a result, they decided to purchase a piece of property to build a new facility, thanks to a generous sale at a below-market rate.
This new site is off Highway 101 in Nehalem, situated behind the Hope Chest Thrift Store. The Food Bank has already secured the necessary permits from the city and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Crews are now working on preparing access roads and a parking area. They plan to bring utilities to the site, with work starting soon.
The Food Bank’s careful financial planning means they have the funds to start this project. They are also looking for grants and other donations to help with costs. After serving the community for over 30 years, they want to ensure they can continue their essential services.
The goal is to complete this new building within the year. However, there may be a temporary closure during construction. The Food Bank aims to minimize any disruptions to services, collaborating with local organizations to address potential increases in demand.
Recent trends show a rising number of families seeking assistance, especially with cuts planned for SNAP and Medicaid. On May 20, a record-breaking 69 families received vital supplies, including food, pet food, diapers, and hygiene items. The need is growing, highlighting the importance of community support during this transition.
As the Food Bank moves forward, they will keep the community updated via press releases and social media. If you want to help, donations can be sent to PO Box 162, Wheeler, OR 97147, or by visiting their website.
According to recent reports, food banks across the country are witnessing similar trends, with increased demand due to economic challenges. This situation is a reminder of the critical role local organizations play in supporting those in need.
