The Northshore Food Bank plays a vital role in St. Tammany Parish, distributing about 80,000 pounds of food each month. Recently, they unveiled a new 20-foot Isuzu box truck, made possible through partnerships with Louisiana Healthcare Connections and CGB Enterprises. This truck is more than just a vehicle; it symbolizes the Food Bank’s commitment to deliver “nourishment and hope,” according to CEO Yvette Roussel.
Since its founding in 1984, the Northshore Food Bank has expanded its services significantly. Today, they assist around 300 households weekly, with plans to provide one million pounds of food to over 5,000 people by year-end.
The importance of this initiative is underscored by sobering statistics. One in six residents in St. Tammany faces food insecurity. Jamie Schlottman, CEO of Louisiana Healthcare Connections, emphasizes that “kids should not go to school hungry.”
This unveiling coincided with Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about hunger in America. The Food Bank has programs tailored for families, seniors, children, and individuals battling cancer. With the addition of the new truck, they can expand their reach, particularly on the eastern side of the parish, where they collaborate with local ministries.
Transportation is often a major barrier for people in need. Roussel points out that the truck will enable them to deliver food directly to families who lack transportation. This move is expected to double their distribution efforts in certain areas.
CGB’s CEO, Eric Slater, expressed pride in supporting the Food Bank’s mission, highlighting the importance of community involvement. The new truck will enhance the Food Bank’s ability to collect and distribute food efficiently, further impacting those who rely on their services.
The Northshore Food Bank’s efforts remind us that while progress is being made, challenges remain. Awareness and support from the community can help mitigate food insecurity and ensure that families have access to the nourishment they need.
