Next season, Notre Dame won’t face the same stress over the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection. Starting in 2024, if they land in the top 12, they’ll secure a playoff spot, thanks to a new agreement with CFP officials. Pete Bevacqua, the Irish athletic director, confirmed this to Yahoo Sports.
This year, Miami snagged the last at-large spot in the playoff, sitting at No. 10, just ahead of Notre Dame. In 2024, if that situation arises again, Notre Dame will take priority.
Under the new rules, even if the playoff grows to 14 teams, Notre Dame will still make the cut if they’re ranked No. 13 or higher.
The college football community was shocked when Notre Dame was left out this season, especially since they didn’t play last weekend. Meanwhile, Alabama, despite a rough game against Georgia, held onto their No. 9 ranking. BYU, on the other hand, dropped after a heavy loss in the Big 12 Championship.
Hunter Yurachek, the CFP chair, mentioned that Notre Dame’s earlier matchup with Miami played a role in their rankings. Miami won that game 27-24, which may have impacted the committee’s decision.
Bevacqua expressed his frustration, stating, “Any rankings prior to this last one are a waste. It feels like the playoff was stolen from our student-athletes.” Following the snub, Notre Dame chose to decline any bowl game invitations.
