Ocean Springs Community Unites to Honor Young Girl’s Legacy with Heartwarming Animal Shelter Food Drive

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. – The community came together on Saturday to celebrate the life of Sophia Myers, a young girl whose love for animals inspires so many.

This event, the 9th Annual All Creatures Big and Small Food Drive, was held in Sophia’s memory after she lost her battle with DIPG, a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Cars lined up outside Quakes Ice Creamery all day, bringing donations for the Jackson County Animal Shelter, a cause dear to Sophia’s heart.

Marie Garbin, the owner of Quakes Ice Creamery, shared how Sophia’s wish was always to help animals. “Even during her toughest days, she wanted everyone to support the shelter,” she said. “We’re continuing her dream of helping animals, and we’ve already seen our first adoption today.”

The drive collected items essential for the shelter, including dog and cat food, collars, leashes, medical treatments, and cleaning supplies. Garbin explained that this event also raises awareness about DIPG while encouraging kindness toward animals.

The goal was to fill an entire truck with donations. While the organizers aimed for a big impact, they emphasized the ongoing need for support at the shelter throughout the year.

According to recent statistics, animal shelters across the U.S. are facing significant challenges. A report by the ASPCA states that approximately 6.3 million animals enter shelters every year. This underscores the importance of community efforts like this one.
