Okanagan Youth Take Action: Passion for a Greener Environment

The passion for the environment is alive and well among young people.

A great example is the Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE) event hosted by Charles Bloom Secondary in Lumby. Almost 400 people, including students, teachers, parents, and mentors, came together to kick off the 2025 initiative.

The morning excitement included a lively skit by drama students from Clarence Fulton Secondary. This marked the beginning of the fourth session of CARE since 2022.

Also noteworthy is a pilot program in Central Okanagan’s School District 23, which is bringing even more students into the climate discussion. This year, nearly 1,000 middle and high schoolers are participating.

Jo de Vries, the CARE coordinator and CEO of Fresh Outlook Foundation, reflects on this growth: “We’re thrilled, but we need more mentors from all walks of life. They can help students turn their ideas into real climate solutions.”

The students are teaming up with mentors to work on projects that align with local climate goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their hard work will be showcased at the CARE Expo on May 29 at the Vernon Curling Club.

This expo isn’t just about student projects. It will feature performances, including a choir from Alexis Park Elementary, alongside displays from local government and climate-focused businesses. Such collaborative efforts aim to build a stronger community dedicated to climate resilience.

As we face an increasingly urgent climate crisis, engaging the youth is more important than ever. According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center, 74% of young people are concerned about climate change, advocating for immediate action. Their involvement in initiatives like CARE represents a promising shift toward a more conscious and proactive generation.
