Millions of individuals turn to ChatGPT for health questions. It’s a popular way to engage with technology about personal health. OpenAI recognizes this trend and is expanding its services. They’ve launched ChatGPT Health, which lets users link their medical records and wellness apps like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal for more tailored interactions. Importantly, OpenAI commits to not using personal medical data for training its models.
During a recent presentation, Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, shared how ChatGPT once helped her avoid a potentially dangerous medication during her recovery from a kidney stone. Her story highlighted how fast-paced medical environments can overlook crucial information. “Many people use AI to piece together their healthcare information,” she said, underlining the need for better organization in medical records.
OpenAI has been preparing for this healthcare push for about two years. They brought in experienced leaders from the medical and tech industries to shape their strategy. A blog post indicated that over 230 million health-related questions are asked on ChatGPT every week globally. This significant engagement shows the growing desire for AI in health, but the competition is fierce among tech giants to secure a place in this market.
OpenAI is teaming up with b.well, a platform that combines health records and other data. Meanwhile, Google has also partnered with b.well, signaling robust competition in AI-driven healthcare tools. ChatGPT Health is not immediately available to everyone; there’s a waitlist for early access, but it will soon reach more users.
While OpenAI doesn’t classify ChatGPT Health as HIPAA-compliant, it claims to implement protective measures for sensitive health data. Users will also have the option to enable multi-factor authentication for added security.
This move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of creating niche applications tailored to different sectors, such as education and finance. Just last July, they introduced Study Mode aimed at students.
In a world increasingly influenced by technology, the intersection of AI and healthcare offers exciting possibilities. However, even as AI transforms health interactions, users must remain cautious about data security and privacy. Adopting AI responsibly will shape the future of personalized healthcare.
