Operation Spiderweb: A Captivating Visual Guide to Ukraine’s Triumph Over Russian Aircraft

Ukrainian forces recently launched a bold drone attack, targeting Russian military aircraft spread across various bases, even reaching as far as Siberia. This marked one of Ukraine’s most extensive strikes of the ongoing war.

The operation, dubbed “Spiderweb,” was planned over 18 months. Ukrainian agents secretly transported short-range drones and explosives into Russia. On Sunday, they executed a coordinated strike aimed at diminishing Russian air superiority.

Vasyl Maliuk, head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), revealed that the drones were smuggled into Russia inside containers. These were disguised as wooden sheds, then loaded onto trucks. Once positioned near Russian bases, a remote mechanism activated, launching the drones. This method circumvented the challenges of launching from Ukraine, where Russian air defenses are formidable.

Drones in this operation were equipped with first-person view (FPV) technology, allowing remote operation, likely from within Ukraine. Ukraine’s SBU estimates that the strikes damaged around 41 planes, with a total value of $7 billion—worth approximately 5.2 billion GBP. Among the aircraft targeted were A-50 surveillance planes and the strategic Tu-95 bombers.

The strikes successfully hit airbases located thousands of miles from Ukraine, including Belaya airbase, which is over 2,500 miles away. Other targets included Olenya in Murmansk and Dyagilevo in Ryazan.

According to the Russian defense ministry, some aircraft faced “fires” during the attack. Fortunately, they reported no casualties and mentioned that several individuals connected to the incident had been apprehended.

As the war continues, Ukraine has strategically built a cost-effective fleet of attack drones to level the playing field against Russian forces.
