Oregon Ducks Secure Top Seed in Match Play Championship – Exciting Updates from University of Oregon Athletics!

ATLANTA – The Oregon women’s golf team has secured the No. 1 seed for match play at the East Lake Cup. They completed a shortened round of stroke play at East Lake Golf Club, finishing first in a strong four-team field.

Due to weather conditions, the round was cut from 18 holes to just nine, but the Ducks still managed to hit an even-par 144. USC ranked second with a score of 3 over, followed by Northwestern at +10 and Florida State at +11.

In the first round of match play on Tuesday, Oregon will face Florida State. The winner moves on to the championship match against the victor of the USC vs. Northwestern matchup. The losing teams will play against each other in a consolation match on Wednesday.

Leading the Ducks was junior Kiara Romero, who shot 1 under for the day, placing her second individually. This marks Romero’s seventh career runner-up finish and her 11th time in the top two, showcasing her consistent performance.

In this condensed round, Oregon’s five-player team displayed impressive teamwork. They accumulated just five bogeys while sinking four birdies. The team’s counting scores made only three bogeys collectively and achieved a notable 3 under without any bogeys during the initial six holes.

Romero started strong, posting four pars before making consecutive birdies at holes 14 and 15. After a bogey at 16, she managed two more pars, finishing just one stroke behind individual champion Dianna Lee from Northwestern. Remarkably, Romero has shot par or better in 59 of her 73 career rounds, closing in on her 300th career birdie.

Sophomores Tong An and Suvichaya Vinijchaitham both ended up even par, just behind Romero. An was 1 under before wrapping up her round with a bogey, while Vinijchaitham stayed steady with nine pars. Freshmen Shyla Singh and Sophie Han also contributed with scores of 1 over. Singh had eight pars and one bogey, while Han recovered from two early bogeys to finish strong, going 1 under over her final six holes.

The match against Florida State is set for Tuesday, with coverage starting on the Golf Channel at noon PT. Fans eagerly await what promises to be an exciting day of competition.
