Osacar Piastri Takes the Lead Amidst Unpredictable FP2 Challenges in Singapore

Oscar Piastri shined during Free Practice 2 at the Singapore Grand Prix, topping the timesheets despite a chaotic session filled with red flags and a pit lane incident involving Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. Earlier, Fernando Alonso led the first practice, but it was Piastri who ultimately posted the best time in conditions more like those expected during the race.

As the session kicked off at 9:00 PM local time, drivers faced a cooler track, and the marina’s floodlights illuminated the circuit. Nico Hulkenberg was the first out, while Alex Albon, relieved to be back on track after problems in the first session, enjoyed a fresh start. Rookie drivers like Gabriel Bortoleto and Kimi Antonelli were eager to test their limits, creating some excitement.

However, the session was disrupted when George Russell crashed into the barriers, damaging his car and prompting a red flag to clear the debris. Russell described the incident as “weird” when he returned to the pits, and the Mercedes team quickly got to work on repairs.

Once the session resumed, drivers switched to soft tires to chase fast laps. Esteban Ocon momentarily took the top spot with a time of 1:31.480, while most drivers focused on improving their setups. Unfortunately, Liam Lawson crashed soon after, causing another stoppage as his car was recovered.

Things took a turn in the pit lane when Leclerc collided with Norris, which led to Norris needing a new front wing after hitting the wall. Norris voiced his frustration, stating, “He just drove straight into me.” This incident prompted an investigation and a fine for Ferrari, highlighting the pressures in high-stakes racing.

As FP2 wound down, Piastri’s performance peaked, and he finished with a time of 1:30.714, knocking Max Verstappen to second. Isack Hadjar and Alonso closely followed, with the final five minutes filled with action as drivers scrambled for the best times.

Norris expressed his disappointment over the radio, but team dynamics remained competitive. The finishing order saw Piastri leading, with Hadjar and Verstappen in hot pursuit.

Looking ahead, drivers will analyze their performance data in preparation for the third practice session and Qualifying. With FP3 scheduled for 5:30 PM local time, teams will aim to refine their strategies for the race ahead.
