The summit revealed deep divisions among participating nations. Countries like Iran condemned Israel, while those with diplomatic ties to Israel hesitated to sever connections. This summit coincided with the anniversary of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the UAE.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed frustration, stating, “Condemnations will not stop the missiles.” His call for decisive action highlights the urgency many feel in addressing the ongoing crisis.
Qatar’s emir delivered a passionate speech, blaming Israel for ignoring the plight of hostages in Gaza. He highlighted the contradiction of Israel seeking hostage negotiations while attacking Hamas leaders. His remarks reflected widespread sentiment that Israel’s military approach may be counterproductive. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested economic pressure on Israel could be effective, drawing on historical precedents.
Iran’s representative, Masoud Pezeshkian, echoed concerns that no nation in the region is safe from Israeli actions, pointing to a missile attack on Qatar earlier this year after U.S. bombings in Iran. This incident underscores rising geopolitical tensions.
Before the summit, some speculated about closing airspace to Israeli flights or downgrading ties with Israel. However, the meeting’s final statement only called for legal measures to prevent further Israeli actions against Palestinians.
Despite tensions, Qatar has played a vital role as a mediator in Israel-Hamas negotiations. The nation has faced criticism from hard-liners in Israel who view its support for Hamas as problematic. Prime Minister Netanyahu has threatened retaliation against any state harboring Hamas leaders.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Israel to discuss the situation, underlining America’s commitment to stabilizing the region. He aims to encourage Qatar to continue its mediating role, stating, “We want to work with all our partners to stop Hamas and reach a ceasefire.”
Amidst all this, the human cost of the conflict remains staggering. The Hamas-led attack on October 7 claimed approximately 1,200 lives, mostly civilians, and resulted in the abduction of over 250 people. Israel’s ongoing military operations have led to devastating casualties in Gaza, with estimates suggesting many victims are women and children.
