New Delhi: Recent tensions in West Asia and the Gulf have prompted the return of over 1.2 million Indians to their home country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that since late February, around 1,212,000 citizens have safely traveled back from the region.
During a briefing, Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem R Mahajan stated that the government is actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals. Despite the unrest, flight services from Gulf countries to India continue, though with some limitations. Mahajan mentioned that about 110 flights are expected to operate from the UAE to India today.
Flights also continue from Saudi Arabia and Oman, while some services to Qatar are running. However, travel routes are being adjusted due to closed airspace in Kuwait, with airlines using alternative paths from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam.
The Indian embassy in Tehran is playing a crucial role in evacuating citizens from Iran. So far, 2,428 individuals, including 1,096 students and 657 fishermen, have been relocated to Armenia and Azerbaijan. Iran’s airspace remains partially open for cargo and charter flights, while Israel has resumed limited operations for onward travel.
The MEA is committed to the safety and well-being of Indians in the region. Mahajan confirmed that embassies and consulates are maintaining 24/7 helplines to provide timely assistance and support to those in need.
The landscape in West Asia is ever-changing. Currently, the U.S. is advocating for diplomatic talks with Iran, amidst a fragile ceasefire. The pressure on Tehran continues with a naval blockade in place. Iran, on the other hand, has labeled these actions as provocative, stirring further tensions.
