Between 2019 and 2022, Indian migrants ranked third among illegal immigrants in the U.S., following Mexico and El Salvador, as reported by the Pew Research Center. This issue is becoming more pressing as authorities prepare for mass deportations.
Illegal immigration has drawn more attention recently, especially after the U.S. President signed an executive order aimed at addressing this challenge. Last week, the Trump administration initiated one of the largest deportation operations in U.S. history, fulfilling a key campaign promise.
The Pew report highlighted significant increases in illegal immigrant numbers from various countries, including India, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and Ecuador. Currently, Mexico leads with about 4 million illegal immigrants, followed by El Salvador with 750,000, and India with approximately 725,000. In 2023 alone, nearly 90,000 Indians were apprehended while attempting to enter the U.S. illegally, according to a New York Times report.
Deportations of Indians from the U.S. are not new; over 1,000 were sent back last year. The Indian government is collaborating with the U.S. to manage these deportations.
In January, Donald Trump signed an order that restricts the entry of individuals he claims are illegally crossing the southern border. He stated that illegal immigration negatively impacts Americans, straining resources and increasing costs across the country. Trump vowed to take necessary actions to address what he called a crisis.
Both the U.S. and India have identified about 18,000 Indian illegal immigrants who may be deported. This number could be higher since the total count of illegal immigrants in the U.S. remains unclear. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that they will assist in the return of Indians who can verify their nationality, emphasizing their stance against illegal immigration, which they link to organized crime.
Indian nationals living abroad without proper documentation can expect to be repatriated, provided the necessary documentation is submitted for verification.
