The Green Bay Packers are shaking things up in their kicking lineup. Recently, they released veteran kicker Brandon McManus, marking a decisive move in their strategy.
The Packers traded up in last month’s draft to select Trey Smack, a promising kicker from Florida. They gave up their two seventh-round picks to the Seahawks to grab him in the sixth round.
General manager Brian Gutekunst expressed a desire for competition at the kicker position earlier this year, but he assured fans that McManus’s past injuries influenced this decision. McManus had shown strong performance, hitting 32 consecutive field goals before a rough outing in the playoffs. Gutekunst noted his resilience, highlighting that McManus was good in challenging weather conditions, which is crucial for a kicker in Green Bay.
McManus joined the Packers mid-season last year after an initial plan with undrafted rookie Brayden Narveson fell flat. He stabilized the team’s kicker position, making 20 of 21 field goals. However, he also faced challenges in high-pressure moments, like missing key field goals during crucial playoff games.
Despite a rocky patch last season due to a quad injury, McManus finished successfully, making 24 out of 30 field goals and gaining momentum with the final 13 kicks of the regular season.
On the other hand, Trey Smack brings impressive stats from college, with an 82.8% success rate in field goals. He excelled in long-range attempts, making 10 of 13 from over 50 yards. New special teams coordinator Cam Achord is confident in Smack’s accuracy and consistency, especially when dealing with challenging Green Bay weather conditions.
With Lucas Havrisik still on the roster, the competition for the kicker spot is heating up. Havrisik stepped in last season when McManus was injured, making all four of his field-goal tries, including a record 61-yarder.
The Packers’ choice to focus on younger talent and create competition may signal a shift toward a more dynamic and resilient team as they build for the future.
