Hackers linked to the Iranian government recently accessed the personal email of FBI Director Kash Patel. They shared materials, including photos and documents, online. A source confirmed that the images were indeed taken from Patel’s account.
The hackers released a set of photos from Patel’s life before he took on his FBI role. Experts validated these images and noted that the stolen emails, dating from about 2011 to 2022, contain personal and business correspondence, as well as travel details.
Ron Fabela, a cybersecurity researcher, commented that this breach is less about sensitive FBI information and more like rummaging through someone’s personal junk drawer. He stated, “This isn’t an FBI compromise; it’s someone’s personal junk drawer.”
The news of this breach initially broke on Reuters. U.S. intelligence officials have been warning about potential retaliation from Tehran, especially following recent airstrikes on Iran. This isn’t the first time Patel’s personal information has been compromised. In 2024, shortly before he became FBI director, he was informed that an Iranian hack had targeted him, also accessing some of his private communications.
This incident is part of a larger trend, as foreign hackers, mainly from Iran and China, have been probing the accounts of incoming Trump administration officials, including notable figures like Todd Blanche and Donald Trump Jr.
The same Iranian-linked group behind Patel’s email breach had targeted a major U.S. medical device company recently. They claimed this attack was retaliation for a missile strike that Iranian media reported killed numerous children in a school. The Pentagon is currently investigating this tragic incident.
The U.S. Justice Department has accused these hackers of working for Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. In response to the attack on the medical company, the department took measures to shut down several websites used by the hackers.
