Phil Simms, the iconic former quarterback of the New York Giants, is making a big return to broadcasting. After stepping away from CBS, he’s now set to call Big Ten college football games on Peacock this season.

Simms, who has a long history in sports commentary, will team up with Paul Burmeister for three specific games: the Illinois-Western Illinois match on August 29, the Rutgers-Miami (OH) game on September 6, and another game yet to be announced.

“I’m thrilled to be back at NBC Sports doing college football. I’ve always enjoyed working with Paul, and I can’t wait to get started,” Simms shared.

This move marks a fresh chapter for Simms. He last played for the Giants in 1993 and has had a storied career in sports media ever since. He started as an analyst for ESPN in 1994 and then joined NBC, contributing to various broadcasts, including calling NFL games and even Olympic events.

His career took a significant turn in 1998 when CBS brought him on board after acquiring rights to the AFC. Simms became a familiar voice during eight Super Bowls before his recent exit from CBS amid a network shake-up. He expressed surprise at the circumstances of his departure, noting he wasn’t consulted about the change.

In addition to Simms, his son, Chris Simms, will also be calling Big Ten games this season. This father-son duo is expected to bring energy to the broadcasts.
