Plastic Bag Ban Now in Effect Across Sindh: What Karachi Residents Need to Know

The Sindh government has officially banned plastic shopping bags across the province, including Karachi. This ban took effect on Sunday after a grace period for manufacturers and retailers ended.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab highlighted the serious problems posed by plastic bags. He noted that they clog drains and sewers, leading to major sanitation issues. "This ban is crucial for managing a cleaner city," he stated.

The government is taking this ban seriously, stating that enforcement will be strict. A province-wide crackdown is set to begin, targeting those who continue to produce or use plastic bags. Agha Shahnawaz Khan, the Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development, emphasized that violators face severe penalties. This includes fines, arrests, and the potential closure of factories.

Khan mentioned that the government had already raised awareness about the issue. Now, they’re adopting a zero-tolerance policy. "We’ve given enough warnings. It’s time to act," he said.
