SAN FRANCISCO — In a thrilling season opener, 18,064 fans filled Chase Center for the Golden State Valkyries, marking it the second-highest home debut in WNBA history. Kelsey Plum made headlines, scoring 37 points in her first game with the Los Angeles Sparks. This record-setting performance was the highest debut score for a Sparks player and the most points by any WNBA player on opening night. She also delivered six assists and five steals.
Plum attributed her success to an enjoyable mindset. “I just love basketball. Competitiveness drives me,” she said. Her impressive shooting included 11-of-19 from the field and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.
During her time with the Las Vegas Aces, Plum teamed with stars like three-time MVP A’ja Wilson. Now, as the Sparks’ primary option, she aims to rejuvenate a struggling offense that faced challenges last season. The Sparks lacked consistent scoring and reliable passing, particularly to players like Dearica Hamby.
“I learned a lot from A’ja about timing and aggressiveness,” Plum remarked. She has been working hard on her conditioning, aiming for a full 40 minutes of play, and her effort showed in this game.
Coach Natalie Nakase praised Plum for her fearless play and ability to drive the lane. “She’s not afraid to get into the paint,” Nakase noted. This assertiveness helped the Sparks start the second half strong, building a 15-point lead.
However, the Valkyries fought back with three consecutive 3-pointers from Julie Vanloo, cutting the lead to six by the end of the third quarter. Plum acknowledged that communication and rhythm need improvement. “We’re adjusting to a new offense, and it’ll take time,” she stated.
In the final quarter, the game slowed down, with strong defense allowing the Sparks to limit Golden State to just seven points. Coach Lynne Roberts highlighted the team’s resilience, especially in a challenging road game. Four Sparks players joined Plum in double figures, showcasing the team’s depth and potential.
As the WNBA season progresses, fans are eager to see if the Sparks can maintain this energy and unlock their full potential under Plum’s leadership. The Sparks’ journey in the league holds the promise of exciting growth and performance.
