Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched two important agriculture initiatives: the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses. Together, these projects total around ₹35,440 crore. The launch coincided with the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, a prominent Indian leader.
During the event, Modi emphasized how these schemes aim to uplift millions of farmers across India. He pledged substantial investments in agriculture to enhance productivity and farmer livelihoods. The PMDDKY focuses on developing 100 agricultural districts by improving productivity and access to credit.
The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses is ambitious. It targets expanding pulse cultivation to 310 lakh hectares and aims to boost production significantly by 2030. This mission will not only enhance food security but also empower future generations.
Modi criticized previous governments for neglecting agriculture. He argued that strong support for farmers is vital for India’s growth. He noted that under his leadership, the current government has provided over ₹13 lakh crore in fertilizer subsidies over the last decade—more than double what the previous government provided.
Experts in agriculture highlight that these initiatives could address not only food security but also nutritional needs, as pulses are critical for sustainable diets. Recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) points out that pulse production can improve soil health and biodiversity, making these schemes timely and necessary.
Moreover, the reduction of GST rates on farming equipment has made it easier for farmers to access necessary tools, helping lower their costs. For instance, tractors now cost less due to these reforms, which is a tangible benefit for the farming community.
As India seeks self-sufficiency in food production, the Prime Minister reiterated the role of farmers in building a developed India, encouraging them to focus on crops that have a global market presence.
Overall, these initiatives mark a significant shift toward a more supportive framework for agriculture in India, with the potential to bring lasting benefits to the farming community.
